A construction barge owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers struck
the downstream side of the Green River bridge just before 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 29th.
The barge "was attempting to go under the Spottsville bridge and the two front cranes
hit the bridge," said Deputy Sheriff Carroll Morrow, who was the first emergency
responder on the scene. "When they hit the bridge it caused some major structural
damage. The structural beam down underneath has two cracks in it. If you get loaded
trucks coming across here it will probably make it worse. That beam has to be
fixed or replaced before the bridge can be reopened." - Frank Boyett, Gleaner Staff

Officials of the Green River Area Development District (GRADD) told the Henderson County
Fiscal Court that a new Spottsville bridge had been listed by the Kentucky
Transportation Cabinet as an "unscheduled but high priority project" with an
estimated cost of $10.3 million.
Members of the Fiscal Court questioned whether the bridge would be adequate
for another 12 years and encouraged the GRADD officials to move the plans forward.
